A Flat Above my Pub

Lyrics and music: Silvano Ancellotti

Tunes: Denis Murphy’s (traditional), The Cobbler’s (traditional)

I have always wondered how far I could go when talking about my personal issues in a song. This time I took some of the most tragic days of my recent history and I turned them into a happy-go-lucky song because when life hands me a lemon I just go to the pub and I ask for a pint or two. I don’t like lemonade too much.

I got kicked out my house
I made a bag and I ran far,
through a flying dishes storm,
sneaking just between bad words
I made my day, I took my way
“you fool, you cannot stay”
with two jumps I’m off the stairs
my darling love, my dear

Then I crashed down on couches
Kinda everywhere in town,
I was trading a sleeping place
With few beers and (some) cheap wine
Looking left, looking right
Stopping only for a pint
Till I found the best deal in life
The offer you can’t deny

I got a flat above my pub
Two stories above my pub
What else I can ask for?
I got a flat above my pub
Goodbye to all this pain
Goodbye to you my dear

Now I got no rest, no sleep
Johnny rings me all the time
I can’t say “night, night my pals”
If I don’t get 5 shots in line
Climbing up to my old den
With an hammer between my eyes
Now tell me, how long I can survive
My darling love my dear

When I slam the door hard
And I lock the boozers out
I wonder what are we meant for
Doing right or enjoin’ the ride?
I’ve been struggling day and night
Trying hard to walk the line
Till I found my peace of mind
Back in my same old messed-up life

I got a flat above my pub
Two stories above my pub
What else I can ask for?
I got a flat above my pub
Goodbye to all this pain
Goodbye to you my dear
